Are You a Neurotic Artist? Yay, me too! + Yoga of Sound (Duluth) ~ early January Newsletter

Happy New Year!

What now?? It's already January 9th?

May you be:
feeling sweet
at ease
able to locate the eye in your storms
and rest there
and see it
and feel it
and hold it
and know that this too shall pass
one foot in front of the other
bridge after bridge over troubled water
look around
you're still alive
look at your hands
breathe into the lowest lobes of your lungs
you
are
here

(and
you
are here
reading
this
ramble ~
thank you!)

HI HI HI and welcome to the (Gregorian calendar) new year.  How is it going for you??? I can honestly say mine has been some creative chaos which has been a mixed bag,  AND I'm here for it,  and let's be real,  it's kind-of the usual.  Thankfully not in over my head in some narcissistic relationship,  thankfully not injured,  thankfully with a roof over my head,  and with dear friends abound, and simple miso soup,  and Duluth cider,  and lots to look forward to.  I would say that 2023 (or maybe 2020-2023??) was a freaking shitshow,  kind up right up there with 2016.  All in the bed with some sweet travel and back to shows after hiatus,  as well as some layers of confusion,  drama-rama,  terror,  beauty,  inspiration,  creative breakthrough, ego struggle,  physical injury, heartbreak,  warrior-strength prying out of hellholes,  deadened by the weight of the world and war,  of changing friend-lines,  of aging,  of financial fear. All in a day,  right?

Maybe I'm manic,  maybe I'm neurotic ... and maybe, just maybe,  you resonate with all of that?  If so,  YAY! Thus brings me to pitch the re-launch of a popular series at my old yoga studio, re-branded:

Self-Care and Spirit Care for Neurotic Artists ~

4 Week Virtual Series on Zoom
Wednesdays 7-8:30pm CST
~ January 17, 24, 31, Feb 7

Investment: $49-99 Sliding scale ~ anywhere here is welcome

Congratulations - you have self-selected as an Artist! And kudos - you've also self-selected as neurotic, so you must have a sense of humor! Please join Mary Bue - musician, yoga teacher, retreat guide, and cow-portrait-painter for this 4-week series delving into the existential dilemmas of being an artist. All artists welcome: musicians, painters, writers, cooks, gardeners, quilters, sculptors, ceramicists, actors, dancers, adult coloring book superstars! And if you don’t identify as an artist but are curious, heck, stop on by.

In each class, there will be a short lecture, some moving/stretching practice, breath work, a short meditation, writing exercises, and so much more as led by Mary’s (oft neurotic) whims.

The hope is to help tap into our creative wells using movement, breathing & philosophy and also have some tools and techniques to take home, to the studio, and to the stage. Everything is connected.

We will delve into these possibilities during our lectures + discussion:

-Creative blockages
-Tools to deal with stage fright / public speaking
-Anxiety/depression that sometimes accompanies creative types + techniques that could be helpful (Mary is not a therapist so these are only suggestions)
-Yogic lifestyle tips including morals/ethics, eating healthy on tour or in manic creative mode, mindfulness
-The meaning of PRACTICE
-The overwhelm that can come along with doing the business of art + music + creative endeavors
-How criticism and failure are our friends
-Working with the ego
-Using dreams to spark inspiration
- And so much more!

Mantras are vehicles for transformation and deeper connection to that which is divine within us. Loosely translated:

  • manas:  mind

  • tra:  instrument, technique, or protection

When working with mantras, we are utilizing an ancient tool to focus and refine the mind, calm and soothe its random fluctuations, linking to our breath, and tuning into our infinite wellspring of creativity, peace, and hope.

In this training, we will explore these ancient symbolic sounds, words, and phrases.

Using the art of listening, we will delve into multiple forms of mantra: Vedic, Tantric, Bhakti, and the Yoga of Sound – Nada Yoga – which surrounds and informs all three.

With respect and gratitude to whence this practice came, we will discuss how to incorporate mantra into public and private classes, with reverence to their origins and attention to cultural sensitivity.

Had the pleasure to share a few songs at a house concert with The Scarlet Goodbye this past weekend.  Thought we would keep the good vibes flowing and bring them to the theatre/bowling alley/restaurant in the city!  I'll be joined by magical humans Jeremy Ylvisaker,  Steve Price, and Richard Medek for this sweet-ass night.

About The Scarlet Goodbye:

The Scarlet Goodbye, labeled “the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota Music History”, is the creative combination of Daniel Murphy and Jeff Arundel.

Murphy, pivotal in the launch of both Soul Asylum and the super-group Golden Smog, had stepped away from the game in 2012, after 30 years of recording and touring. A chance meeting with mellow Singer-Songwriter Jeff Arundel led the duo, whose careers spanned the same time frame but had essentially no other resemblance, to start writing and recording.

With the first collaboration, “Paris”, they realized that they were onto something, as Murphy shoved Arundel into a swagger, and Arundel tip-toed Murphy onto revealing some vulnerabilities. Meeting in an attic studio during the Pandemic, Murphy and Arundel fashioned a collection of songs that producer John Fields, who was brought in to mix the record, calls “both timeless and unique, part Rolling Stones and part Townes Van Zandt”.
